During the August membership meetings, votes were taken at all of the union’s constitutional ports on a matter proposed by SIU President Dave Heindel and unanimously approved by the SIU Executive Board to change the status of four informational port facilities: the halls in Norfolk, Virginia; Jacksonville, Florida; Wilmington, California; and Tacoma, Washington.
A majority of the voting membership concurred and, as a result, effective October 1, 2023, the port offices in Norfolk, Jacksonville, Wilmington and Tacoma will all be classified as constitutional ports – meaning that official actions can be taken at the meetings in those ports, along with all other constitutional ports, starting with the October membership meetings.
