Frontiers of Freedom recently published a new report, “The Jones Act Blocks China’s Plan for Global Domination,” authored by former U.S. Congressman Ernest Istook, a distinguished fellow with the policy group.
In this report, the former congressman details the importance of the Jones Act for blocking China’s expansion into the “all-important domestic trade waters of the United States.” Moreover, he explains how a Jones Act repeal would sacrifice America’s borders, security and interests as heavily-subsidized foreign shipping would invade domestic waters. With 90% of global trade conducted by ship, he accurately argues it is essential to maintain an American domestic maritime base as other nations, including China, seek to create a global maritime monopoly.
While opponents of the Jones Act contend that American companies can save money if we turn over domestic cargo to foreign-subsidized fleets, Mr. Istook states this would be “surrender, not savings,” equating it to selling our national and homeland security to save a few dollars.
