About the SIU

Maritime Trades Department

The Maritime Trades Department, AFL-CIO

Created in 1946, the Maritime Trades Department, AFL-CIO gives workers in the maritime industry and its allied trades a voice in shaping national policy. (Click HERE to visit the MTD web site.)

The MTD is one of seven constitutionally mandated departments within the AFL-CIO. Its 24 affiliated international unions help comprise a network of 24 port maritime councils in the United States and Canada. This allows the MTD to be active in issues affecting working men and women from the grassroots to the national level.

The main purpose of the MTD is to stand up for the working people of the U.S.-flag and Canadian-flag maritime industry -- from the shipbuilders to the mariners to the longshoremen to all of their suppliers and associates. The department performs a specialized role in the Labor movement by highlighting policies and programs that ensure the continuation of a strong North American maritime industry.
