Snug Harbor Offering Financial Assistance for Retirees (12/4)

Back to News

The SIU is reaching out to retirees with some time-sensitive information that may lead to financial assistance from Sailors’ Snug Harbor (SSH). Excerpts of a letter to retirees from SIU President Michael Sacco follow. Please note that retirees will need the actual letter before contacting SSH, since it contains the individual’s “Unique Mariner Identifying Number.”

If you are a seafarer who presently receives a pension of $1,000 or under, you may be eligible to receive some financial assistance from SSH if you contact them immediately. In order to be considered you must call SSH at 888-257-5456 or 646-465-8585 to speak to an SSH staff person. If voicemail answers, leave your name and phone number. This must be done when you receive this letter and before the last week in December. To assure identity, you will be required to provide the above Unique Mariner Identifying Number (UMIN) as well as your name, address and Social Security number. We have provided them with your name and Unique Mariner Identifying Number. You will be asked to voluntarily provide your Social Security number upon accepting the one-time cash supplement. SSH has agreed that by you providing your Social Security number, they will not use it for any other purposes.”

The letter from the SIU continues, “In addition to the possible one-time assistance listed above you may be eligible for additional financial help with some of your basic living needs. This will also involve a call to SSH at the above numbers or looking at their website: You will need to complete an application and submit financial and other information. They will help you through this process. You just need to call to see if you are eligible.”
