NMC Posts Info on Medical Certificate Issuance (1/9)

Back to News

The U.S. Coast Guard’s National Maritime Center (NMC) on January 8 issued the statement that is reprinted at the bottom of this page. The NMC has also updated its website with comprehensive information about STCW-mandated medical certificates, at the following web address:

According to the Coast Guard, medical certificates are being mailed to mariners who hold STCW endorsements. No action should be required of individual mariners in order to obtain the medical certificates; however, those who do not receive them by March 31 are asked to contact the NMC.

As previously reported, Rear Adm. Joseph Servidio, U.S. Coast Guard assistant commandant for prevention policy, in late December issued a letter that reads in part: “Therefore, effective January 2, 2014, the National Maritime Center (NMC) will begin issuing medical certificates to those mariners who hold STCW endorsements, and, on January 24, 2014, will begin to issue medical certificates to all mariners in the normal course of the application process. Please recognize that once you receive a medical certificate, it should be carried with your merchant mariner credential (MMC). Also, if you are a current holder of a valid STCW endorsement and you do not receive your medical certificate by March 31, 2014, we ask that you please contact the NMC at 1 888-I-ASKNMC (1-888-427-5662).”

Finally, this is the January 8 statement from the NMC:

Medical Certificate Issuance

In response to changing procedures associated with the publication of the Final Rule,

titled “Implementation of the Amendments to the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers, 1978 (STCW), as Amended, and Changes to National Endorsements,” as of January 2, 2014, the Coast Guard is issuing separate medical certificates to certify mariner compliance with minimum medical standards.
