Congress recently passed two resolutions hailing the captain and crew of the Maersk Alabama. Both House Resolution 339 and Senate Resolution 108 lauded the heroic mariners for their efforts in thwarting the pirate attack on the U.S.-flagged cargo ship that was in the Indian Ocean transporting humanitarian relief to Kenya, Somalia and Uganda. Both resolutions thank and congratulate the mariners, the U.S. Navy and other government agencies for their resolve during the five-day incident. They also call for studies on how to deter and end piracy on the high seas.
The Senate resolution was introduced by Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-Vermont) and the House version was introduced by Rep. Peter Welch (D-Vermont).
