Aker Launches Seventh Product Tanker (4/20)

The following was released on April 20 by Aker Philadelphia Shipyard about the launch of a seventh product tanker that will operated by SIU-contracted Overseas Shipholding Group.

AKER PHILADELPHIA SHIPYARD LAUNCHES SEVENTH PRODUCT TANKER
The seventh Veteran Class MT-46 Product Tanker is the eleventh vessel built by the shipyard

PHILADELPHIA, PA (April 20, 2009) – Aker Philadelphia Shipyard (Oslo: AKPS), a leading U.S. commercial shipyard, launched Hull 011, the seventh in a series of 12 product tankers to be completed by 2011.

When completed, the 600 foot long vessel will be sold to American Shipping Company (Oslo: AMSC) and bareboat chartered to OSG America for use transporting petroleum products.

The 46,000 dwt vessel was floated off of its blocks late in the morning on Friday, and was transferred by tug from the Building Dock to the Outfitting Dock on Saturday, where it will remain for the next few weeks as it undergoes testing and commissioning in preparation for sea trials next month.

Hull 011 is scheduled for delivery in the second quarter of 2009 and will join its six sister ships in transporting petroleum products in the Jones Act. For more information on the launch, please visit www.akerphiladelphia.com for a photo from the launch as well as updates on the three other vessels currently under construction at the yard.

Aker Philadelphia Shipyard is a leading U.S. commercial shipyard constructing vessels for operation in the Jones Act market. It possesses a state-of-the-art shipbuilding facility and has earned a reputation as the preferred provider of oceangoing merchant vessels with a track record of delivering quality ships.

Aker Philadelphia Shipyard is a member of the Norwegian-based Aker family of global companies, leaders in global growth markets including energy technologies, energy resources, maritime technologies, seafood and marine biotechnology.

American Shipping Company (AMSC) owns and leases world-class quality vessels for operation between ports in the United States. When the current series of twelve tankers is completed in 2011, AMSC will own the most modern product tanker fleet in the United States; and it will be the first company in the United States to own shuttle tankers for use in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico.
