MTD urges action on national dredging policy (8/23)

The Maritime Trades Department, AFL-CIO (MTD) recently commented on a review of the national dredging policy being undertaken by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

Noting that an earlier review had yielded some important results, the MTD underscored the following points:

  • U.S. ports and port dredging are essential components of a healthy U.S. economy and the defense of the nation;

  • U.S. dredging projects should be funded at adequate levels; and

  • Any dredging policy enacted should recognize the special needs of the Great Lakes industry.

    The MTD also addressed other issues as well, including research, the beneficial uses of dredged materials and the need to expand the times of the year that dredging can be done.

    The MTD also praised the EPA for its overview of the issue, including its observation that “a network of ports and harbors is essential to the United States’ economy, affecting its competitiveness in world trade and national security.

    “Port facilities serve as a key link in the intermodal transportation and can realize their full potential as magnets for shipping and commerce only if dredging occurs in a timely and cost-effective manner.”
