SIU will participate in LNG signing ceremony (6/4)

A signing ceremony for agreement on universal standards for LNG tanker crews is scheduled to take place June 5 in Washington, D.C., the U.S. Maritime Administration announced.

The SIU will participate in the event, as will other U.S. maritime unions, representatives from various maritime academies, and U.S. Maritime Administrator Sean Connaughton.

In announcing the ceremony, MarAd noted that the agreement is designed “to implement a set of universal standards in training crews for tankers carrying Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG). The standards were developed by an industry working group facilitated by the Maritime Administration. The agreement will help expand the pool of U.S. mariners qualified to sail the ships in the growing worldwide LNG fleet.”

Signatories include the Seafarers International Union; American Maritime Officers; Marine Engineers’ Beneficial Association; Masters, Mates, and Pilots; Sailors’ Union of the Pacific; the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy; California Maritime Academy; Great Lakes Maritime Academy; Maine Maritime Academy; Massachusetts Maritime Academy; the Maritime College of the State University of New York; Texas Maritime Academy, and the Maritime Administration.
