During remarks Sept. 4 at the SIU-affiliated Paul Hall Center for Maritime Training and Education, President Bush stated his strong support for the Jones Act.“It’s important for presidents to embrace the Jones Act,” he said during an address at the school in Piney Point, Md. “I have, so far, five-and-a-half years as the president, supported the Jones Act, and will continue to do so as the president.”
The Jones Act, a staple of America’s maritime policy, mandates that cargo transported from one U.S. port to another be carried on U.S.-crewed, U.S.-flag, U.S.-built vessels.
