Statement by SIU President Michael Sacco
On President Bush’s visit to the Paul Hall Center (9/4)

The Seafarers International Union and our affiliated training center are tremendously honored to welcome President Bush for Labor Day. President Bush and his administration consistently have recognized the value of the U.S. Merchant Marine to America’s national and economic security. His leadership has created thousands of jobs in the U.S.-flag fleet.

For example, one year ago the U.S. Maritime Security Program began expanding from 47 militarily useful U.S.-flag vessels to 60, thanks to bipartisan legislation signed by the President in late 2003. Also, the administration’s steadfast support of the Jones Act has helped ensure jobs for U.S. mariners while protecting America’s best interests.

Making the President’s visit to the Paul Hall Center all the more fitting is the fact that thousands of patriotic SIU members have sailed in support of Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom. Thousands more Seafarers have continued to meet the industry’s needs on the commercial side, skillfully manning the tankers and containerships and tugboats and ferries that help sustain America’s economy.

This is a day none of us will ever forget, and we are grateful for the opportunity.
