Maritime Day photos and links (5/23)

Shown below are photos from three National Maritime Day events that took place May 22 in Washington, D.C. The SIU participated in all three affairs – a morning ceremony sponsored by the U.S. Maritime Administration, a Propeller Club luncheon featuring U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao, and an afternoon ceremony conducted by the U.S. Military Sealift Command. The union also supported related events in the area including a Mass celebrated by Cardinal Theodore McCarrick and a forum on mariners’ welfare hosted by the North American Maritime Ministry Association.

Additionally, SIU President Michael Sacco was the featured speaker at the annual National Maritime Day luncheon in San Pedro, Calif. following the traditional ceremony at the American Merchant Marine Veterans Memorial in that city.

Secretary Chao issued a statement honoring mariners that is available on the Labor Department web site by clicking here

The Labor Department also posted a separate news release for National Maritime Day, available here

MSC issued a National Maritime Day press release (with photos) here

The Maritime Administration's web site features Maritime Day coverage and history starting on the agency's home page here

Additional coverage will be included in the June issue of the Seafarers LOG.
