When the Nation Calls, Maritime Responds;
MTD Executive Board Meets February 24-25

For Immediate Release
February 17, 2006
For more information, contact Daniel Duncan in San Diego: 619-435-6611

From assisting after natural disasters to supporting American troops around the globe, the U.S.-flag Merchant Marine answered the call each and every time it was sounded during 2005. A review of how the U.S.-flag fleet and its civilian crew responded will be among the topics of discussion when the Maritime Trades Department, AFL-CIO (MTD) Executive Board meets February 24-25, 2006, at the Hotel del Coronado near San Diego.

The Honorable Norman Mineta, Secretary of Transportation; members of Congress; military commanders and industry executives will speak to an audience of labor officials and maritime business representatives.

The sessions will take place in the Viceroy Room of the Hotel del Coronado, 1900 Orange Avenue, Coronado, CA. MTD President Michael Sacco will call the meeting to order at 9:30 a.m. (PST) each day.

The scheduled speakers for Friday, February 24, include U.S. Representative Xavier Becerra (CA); Captain Robert Johnston, Senior Vice President, OSG, Inc.; Daniel Kane, Secretary-Treasurer, United Mine Workers of America; and Ralph Maly, Vice President, Communications Workers of America.

Guests slated to speak before the MTD Executive Board on Saturday, February 25, are Secretary Mineta; U.S. Representatives Neil Abercrombie (HI) and James Clyburn (SC); AFL-CIO President John Sweeney; Vice Admiral David Brewer (USN), Commander, U.S. Military Sealift Command; and General Norton Schwartz (USAF), Commander, U.S. Transportation Command.

The Maritime Trades Department, AFL-CIO is composed on 24 international unions and 24 port maritime councils in the United States and Canada representing 5.5 million working men and women.
