Photos from workers’ rights rally (12/9)

Dozens of Seafarers were among the estimated 3,000 people who participated in a pro-worker rally Dec. 8 in Washington, D.C. The demonstration was one of hundreds of events worldwide that are part of International Human Rights Week.

Photos from the Washington rally appear below. Additional coverage will be included in the January edition of the Seafarers LOG and also may be found on the AFL-CIO web site by clicking HERE

Recapping the demonstration as well as the entire week – culminating with numerous events on Dec. 10, International Human Rights Day – the federation noted in a news release that “employers have stolen workers’ freedom to improve their lives through unions, and the laws are too weak to stop them.” The rallies “are pointing to workers’ right to improve their lives through a union as a human right included in the UN Declaration of Human Rights and calling on employers and lawmakers to save the middle class by restoring the freedom of workers to form unions and win union contracts.”
