Maersk Line, Limited awarded contract for ammo ships (12/14)

Seafarers-contracted Maersk Line, Limited recently issued the following news release. Maersk Line, Limited Awarded Ammunition Contract Contract Provides for Prepositioning of Afloat Containerized Ammunition NORFOLK, VA, 8 December, 2005: Maersk Line, Limited (MLL) has been awarded a one year contract to charter two vessels under Military Sealift Command’s (MSC) Prepositioning Program. The contract covers sister ships, the MV Lt. Col. John U.D. Page and MV Sgt. Edward A. Carter, Jr. This contract award, which follows MLL’s successful completion of an existing 5-year contract, has options that could extend the performance period to a total of 59 months. Built originally as commercial containerships, the ships each carry a total of 2,500 20-foot containers in air conditioned, humidity controlled cargo holds. They are 950 feet long, just short of a Nimitz class aircraft carrier. Carrying a crew of 20 US citizen merchant mariners, the vessels have on-board cranes to facilitate unloading of cargo where shoreside support is unavailable. Maersk Line, Limited managed the conversions of both vessels, with extensive modifications, after which they were delivered to MSC in 2001. MLL has a proven track record of providing over two decades of quality ship management services and is a long-term trusted partner with the U.S. Department of Defense.
