The role of the US-flag merchant fleet in America’s military, humanitarian and economic efforts will be a topic of major discussion when the Maritime Trades Department, AFL-CIO (MTD) Executive Board meets February 24-25, 2005, at Bally’s Las Vegas.Secretary of Transportation Norman Mineta, along with members of Congress, representatives of the military and other administration officials, will speak to an audience of labor officials and maritime industry representatives during the two days of meetings.
The sessions will take place in the Las Vegas Ballroom of Bally’s Las Vegas at 3645 Las Vegas Boulevard South, Las Vegas, Nevada. MTD President Michael Sacco will call the meeting to order at 9:30 a.m. (PST) each day.
The scheduled speakers for Thursday, February 24, include US Representatives Shelley Berkley (D-NV) and Bennie Thompson (D-MS); General John W. Handy, Commander, US Transportation Command; Steven Blust, Chairman, Federal Maritime Commission; and John Jamian, Acting Administrator, U.S Maritime Administration.
Guests slated to speak before the MTD Executive Board on Friday, February 25, are Secretary Mineta; US Representatives Norm Dicks (D-WA), William Jefferson (D-LA) and Loretta Sanchez (D-CA); AFL-CIO President John Sweeney; and Sheila McNeill, President of the Navy League of the United States.
The Maritime Trades Department, AFL-CIO is composed on 28 international unions and 24 port maritime councils in the United States and Canada representing 7 million working men and women.
