IMO safety meeting set (11/30)

The International Maritime Organization’s Maritime Safety Committee is scheduled to meet at the IMO’s London headquarters Dec. 1-10 for its 79th session.

In a news release previewing the session, the IMO noted, “The development of goal-based standards for new ship construction will be high on the agenda…. Other important issues on the agenda include large passenger ship safety and implementation of the maritime security measures adopted by IMO. The agenda also includes the adoption of amendments to the SOLAS Convention 1, including a revised chapter on bulk carrier safety, amendments to make mandatory the carriage of simplified voyage data recorders on existing cargo ships and the introduction of a unique company identification scheme. The Maritime Safety Committee is also expected to adopt a number of ships’ routing measures and the proposed Western European waters mandatory ship reporting scheme.”

Bill Eglinton, vice president of the SIU-affiliated Paul Hall Center for Maritime Training and Education, will participate in the meetings.
