SIU members participate in anti-terrorism exercise (8/5)

Seafarers aboard the SIU-contracted Tyco Decisive participated in an anti-terrorism exercise Aug. 5 in Baltimore. The drill was jointly conducted by the State of Maryland, City of Baltimore, Federal Bureau of Investigation and the U.S. Coast Guard.

In announcing the exercise, the Maryland Emergency Management Agency noted, “A simulated attack on a large vessel will be held within the Port of Baltimore at the Tyco Telecommunications Fleet Operations Center on the Patapsco River. This event is designed to train for a coordinated response to a major maritime incident within the Port. Response to the incident will be both from the land and water by local authorities.

“Determined Promise 04 is a nationwide terrorism exercise directed by U.S. Northern Command (NORTHCOM) to test Homeland Security Strategic Operations through Command Post Exercises and Field Training Exercises. In addition to Baltimore, these exercise will take place in several cites including Hampton Roads/Norfolk, Va., Los Angeles, San Diego, and Houston.”

Additional photos from the exercise appear below.

Earlier this year, SIU members aboard the Tyco Decisive assisted in the grim task of recovering bodies from a water-taxi tragedy that claimed five lives. The accident happened March 6 in Baltimore when a 36-foot, two-ton pontoon boat capsized in a fast-moving storm.
