The U.S. Military Sealift Command (MSC) reports that the SIU-crewed USNS Red Cloud recently reached “the milestone of 1,000 days of accident free operations – nearly three years without experiencing a single crew member injury that required medical attention beyond basic first aid.”Operated by Maersk Line, Limited, the Red Cloud is part of MSC’s fleet of large, medium-speed, roll-on/roll-off vessels. The ship has been actively supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom for the past year, “carrying multiple cargo loads of equipment and supplies from Southwest Asia, Europe and the continental United States to U.S. forces in the Middle East,” MSC noted. “In March and April 2004, she carried equipment and supplies for the 1st and 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiments.”
The agency further pointed out, “Operating for 1,000 days accident-free is a significant milestone for a very busy ship involved in the prepositioning and sealift of equipment and supplies for the U.S. military. The ship’s crew adheres to an extensive safety management program that delineates procedures for functions such as how to enter a confined space in an emergency, crane safety procedures and safe crew transfer operations.”
