Scholarships available to Seafarers, dependents (11/6)

As in past years, the Seafarers Health and Benefits Plan is offering eight scholarships to Seafarers and their spouses and dependent children to help offset constantly increasing tuition rates.

Three of the scholarships for 2004 are reserved for SIU members. One of those is in the amount of $20,000 for study at a four-year college or university. The other two are for $6,000 each and are intended as two-year awards for study at a post-secondary community college or vocational school. The other five scholarships will be awarded in the amount of $20,000 each to the spouses and dependent children of Seafarers.

The deadline for submitting the application and other required paperwork is April 15, 2004. That leaves five months from now in which to send away for the program booklet and start working on collecting the items needed for inclusion with the application (such as transcripts, certificates of graduation, letters of recommendation, a photograph and certified copy of birth certificate).

Applicants should also arrange to take either the SAT or ACT no later than February 2004 in order to ensure the results reach the selection committee in time to be evaluated.

To obtain the 2004 SIU Scholarship Program booklet – which contains eligibility information, procedures for applying and a copy of the application form – contact your port agent or complete the form printed on page 11 of the November 2003 issue of the Seafarers LOG. The completed form should be submitted to the Seafarers Health and Benefits Plan, 5201 Auth Way, Camp Springs, MD 20746.
