With the SIU-crewed Cornhusker State docked nearby, Seafarers received the Professional Ship Award from U.S. Secretary of Transportation Norman Mineta during a ceremony Nov. 15 in Newport News, Va. The award was given “for providing exceptional service in providing cargo operations and transportation of equipment during Operation Enduring Freedom,” according to the U.S. Maritime Administration.Seafarers on the Cornhusker State received Expeditionary Medals.
“For six months without relief, the Cornhusker State and crew supported the ongoing war against terrorism,” said Secretary Mineta. “In years to come, history will recall the valiant service of the S.S. Cornhusker State and crew with these three simple words: Duty, Loyalty and Service.”
