The House Armed Services Committee, chaired by U.S. Rep. Duncan Hunter (R-Calif.), recently advanced legislation that would extend the U.S. Maritime Security Program (MSP) for 10 additional years. The expanded MSP, part of the National Defense Authorization Act, calls for increasing the number of participants from 47 ships to 60 ships. Action by the full House could take place this week. The Armed Services Committee approved the Act on May 14 by a vote of 58-2. The updated MSP would begin in October 2005, immediately after the current version expires.
