House passes an updated MSP (5/27)

The U.S. House of Representatives late last week passed H.R. 1588, the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2004. Included in the measure is language providing for reauthorization of the U.S. Maritime Security Program (MSP).

The updated MSP would be extended for 10 additional years, beginning in October 2005, immediately after the current version expires. The expanded MSP also calls for increasing the number of participants from 47 ships to 60 ships.

The vote count in the House was 361-68.
